HOW TO DRAW A LEAF: Drawing FUNdamentals

Artwork by Susan Donahue

Are you nervous, but curious about drawing? Would you like to expand your range of drawing media and techniques? Are you a seasoned artist who would like to start exploring nature as subject? In this hands-on class, you will learn how to expertly combine drawing materials, get comfortable with representational and abstract techniques, and learn how to draw a leaf! During the first half of class, we will master the fundamentals of drawing through a series of fun exercises. We will then apply our new skills by going outside, picking up a leaf, and drawing the very essence of it. This class delivers quick, satisfying results that will help you fall in love with drawing.

TRUE NATURE:  The Art and Craft of Field Journaling
Do you get inspired by the natural world?  Are you interested in learning how to jot, draw and write, exploring nature as subject?  Join me along with Mary Kiesau, naturalist and educator at the Methow Conservancy, in this hands-on class to explore the natural world of the Methow and learn the fundamental aspects of field sketching, note-taking, and journaling to creatively engage your surroundings.  During the first half of each day, we will master drawing with pencils and pen, and loosen up with some fun writing exercises.  We will then apply our new skills in the field, working at a beautiful location in the Methow Valley.  This class is designed to grow your thoughts, feelings, and observations of the natural world, while providing easy-to-learn techniques for drawing, journaling, and composition.

No experience is necessary, though “How to Draw A Leaf” class is recommended as a preparatory course.

EXPLORING ABSTRACTION
Fiona Abstract copyAbstraction allows us to explore the intrinsic nature of things.  This comprehensive workshop is designed to help you bridge the gap between representational drawing and abstraction. The course begins with a series of fun, easy exercises to explore new directions in drawing, composition, proportion, and scale.   Emphasizing both technique and perception, you will learn how to draw “the essence” of any subject you choose.  Participants will receive individual guidance and support.  All levels are welcome.

lelandMAPS, MEMENTOS, and MIXED MEDIA
Transform your photos, keepsakes, writings, and printed matter into beautiful finished artworks.  In this class you will be guided through a series of radical solutions for combining visual ephemera with acrylic painting while being supported and encouraged through the process of concept development and composition.  Abstract, figurative and representational approaches are all welcome.  This class will enable you to push the boundaries of expression while addressing the finer points of image construction and presentation.  There are no prerequisites for this class.  All are welcome.  Perfect for printmakers, too!
